About WPLA
Our History
In December 1999, a group of Wisconsin loggers met across the state to determine whether there was sufficient interest in forming a professional association – an association that was by loggers, for loggers. In January 2000, the first official state board meeting of the Wisconsin Professional Loggers Association was held. Since then, WPLA has rapidly positioned itself to be a recognized leader on forestry issues. WPLA has taken strong positions on and lobbied for state and national sustainable forestry issues that are not only good for loggers, but will help sustain our forest industry and its economic and environmental benefits to Wisconsin in the long run.
Our Organization
WPLA consists of four chapters: Northwest, Northeast, Southeast, and Southwest. These chapters were created to ensure that WPLA remained a grass-roots organization, allowing the chapters to deal with local issues. The State Board has 14 members, including a chair and vice-chair from each chapter, as well as representation from a forest agency, university, forest industry, conservation group, and woodland owners.
Our Purpose
WPLA’s mission is straightforward:
* To enhance and promote Wisconsin’s logging profession
* To provide a forum for resolution of issues of concern to professional contractors through communication, education and legislation
* To work with agencies, private woodland owners, and the forest industry to practice and promote sustainable forestry practices
